The LTSC version is a “fixed,” stripped-down version of Windows that does not include any new features. This naturally results in fewer entry points for malware. With LTSC, Microsoft is deliberately focusing on stripped-down releases that receive security updates for only 5 years, rather than 10, compared to the previous version.
In 2019, Microsoft consolidated the “Current Branch” (CB), the “Current Branch for Business,” and the “Long Term Servicing Branch” (LTSB) into the new “Semi-Annual Channel” (SAC). LTSC is thus the successor to LTSB, which was released in the 2015 and 2016 versions.
LTSC stands for “Long Term Servicing Channel” and is an update channel reserved exclusively for business customers that previously offered long-term support (5 years of mainstream support + 5 years of extended support); however, since Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC, this support has been limited to just 5 years. Unlike the Professional version, LTSC is rolled out without preinstalled apps (such as Cortana, the Edge browser, the Windows Store, etc.). Unlike the Windows Professional version, the version installed receives only security updates, not feature updates.
Microsoft promises to release new versions every 2 to 3 years.
Microsoft recommends this stripped-down system for specific scenarios, such as plant control systems, ATMs, or point-of-sale systems. However, there are also companies that deliberately choose to use LTSC versions on their end-user devices.
There are no driver updates, so new hardware components cannot be installed. Please be sure to test your hardware on a test system beforehand to verify that it is supported. You can also check whether the more affordable previous versions, LTSB 2015 or 2016, are suitable.

LTSB was renamed LTSC in 2019. Therefore, Windows 10 Enterprise is only available in the LTSC version.
Windows 10 Enterprise, on the other hand, has also been released in the LTSB and LTSC versions.
Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC can only be purchased through volume licensing agreements, such as Select and Enterprise Agreement. It is much easier and more cost-effective to purchase a used license, which includes the same usage rights as a new license and is significantly more affordable.
Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC is always licensed by device when purchased. This means you must purchase a license for each device on which it is installed.
All LTSC versions may also be installed as older versions of Windows, such as LTSB, Windows 8 Enterprise, or Windows 7 Enterprise. However, thanks to down-edition rights, they may also be installed as Windows 11 Professional.

- Ideal for terminals or ATM counters, but it is also used by companies for user PCs, even though Microsoft does not recommend this.
Disadvantages
- Fewer features
- No driver updates, risk of hardware incompatibilities
- No option for newer versions
- You must carefully consider whether this version is suitable for your IT infrastructure
